- Gregory Peck is the ambassador to the United States who's wife has a stillborn child. Without her knowledge, he substitutes another baby as theirs. A few years go by, and then grisly deaths begin to happen. The child's nanny hangs herself and a priest is speared to death in a freak accident. It turns out the child is the son of Satan and can only be killed with the seven daggers of Meggado. The first and best in the series of films about devil-child Damien teamed agreat cast (Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner, Patrick Troughton,Billie Whitelaw) with Harvey Stephens in a chilling performance as thechild.
The deaths most of the cast meet are inventive and in some cases, memorablefor many years after viewing the film - giving the opportunity for someunusual and striking visuals, while the whole film is soaked in that loudGoldsmith score to great effect.
The sequels, alas, were poor in comparison, but 'The Omen' stands alone ofits type of seventies horror schlock.
